Converting your car to run on Hydrogen is proven to lower fuel costs, increase mileage - and help the environment.

But, up until recently, it was also pretty expensive - the only way to convert your car to water was to get it done professionally, which could cost as much as $2,000. Even stand-alone conversion kits can sell for as much as $500.

Luckily, the last six months has seen a crop of conversion-kit guides, which show how to convert your car to water yourself - using low cost materials, and with little or no technical knowledge required.

We decided to sit down and review these new guides - our key criteria were ease-of-use, affordability of materials, and speed of installation.

Overall, we were pleasantly suprised with the results - the technology evidently does work, and if you pick the right guide, you could well be up and running in a few hours.

Run Your Car On  Water

Overall this package is easily the best one out of all the guides that we tested.

And with so many different guides on the market to choose from, its definitly saying something.

For ease of use, and the quality of the material and its layout, this guide is just the best value on the market. For more information about it read below, or to visit the site now, just click below.

Water4Gas

Water4Gas, is the most complete package out of all the hydrogen car kit guides, the only thing we did not like about it is its cost over our first choice, and this is why we moved it down to second place.

All that being said, this guide does come with a ton of really good bonuses when you purchase, including a guide on how to get a government rebate for your conversion expenses, good value for those that can afford it.

Water For Fuel

We found water for fuel to be a pretty poor quality guide, making it our least favorite choice out of the top three guides.

Although the information is there in this guide, the main things that put us off it where the fact that it is really badly published, with poor font and badly organised instructions.

We also found that this guide included quite a lot of unnecessary information about the theory of  hydrogen conversion, which was not helpful for the user.

"Still the best Water Fuel Kit in 2008..."

By far the easiest-to-follow guide we came across - our own experience says you should set aside maybe half a day to buy the parts and get fully installed.

This is the only guide that assumes absolutely no knowledge of cars. Impressively, our support ticket was responded to in under an hour (although it could take a little longer at weekends), and there is an unconditional 8 week guarantee.

Best of all, the technology required is readily available and cheap - we were able to access all the parts needed for well under $50. Given that its proven to increase fuel efficiency by as much as 40%, you could well recoup your investment in under a week.

Installation works with any gas or diesel powered car, van, truck or SUV. Aimed squarely at car "novices", and still our top pick for 2008.

May 2008 Update : there is now a promotion running on the site, and it is temporarily available for $49 instead of $297 - as such, we recommend ordering sooner rather than later.

The Verdict: Fast and easy setup; works for complete car novices; proven fuel savings of upto 40% - our top pick
